If your pet has ingested a toxic amount of any of these substances please call Lisa at 1-715-553-0127 and the following: ASPCA Poison Control Hotline: 1-888-426-4435 National Pet Poison Helpline: 1-800-213-6680 It's been my understanding that the quickest way to get your dog to quit eating feces is to do several things. Clean up after your dog everyday so they don't have any to eat. Purchase a crate on a false floor, usually a grate, so if your pet defecates it will fall through to the bottom where they can’t reach it. You can also use meat tenderizer, hot sauce or lemon juice, sprinkled on their food, as home remedies to make the feces taste bad. There is also an inexpensive OTC medicine you can get called "Potty Mouth"tm that works effectively. Other pet parents have had luck adding a probiotic to their French Bulldogs diet (I suggest Nutri-Vet Pre & Probiotic soft chews)tm. It is thought that it helps improve your pet’s digestive enzymes.
Why does my dog do something so disgusting? Animal Behaviorists believe that puppies began eating their own feces while they were in the wild as protection so predators couldn't smell and locate them and to keep their den clean. Mother's clean their babies by licking them after they eat and defecate. Puppies observe this behavior and continue to do it themselves possibly as a comfort measure. Some puppies simply do it out of boredom. Causes: in some species Coprophagia is an endocrine pancreatic insufficiency which is treated by replacing these digestive enzymes with freeze dried pancreas. In the long term: if your dog continues to eat their feces it can lead to Giardia which is difficult to treat and involves quarantining your dog when they defecate so other dogs don't get the condition. You need to bring in a stool sample to be tested, which takes about 45 minutes. The veterinary treatment is twofold; Safeguard (Fenbendazole) and Metronidazole. The first treatment is for 14 days, then wait for 7 days and repeat. More on Giardia later. Please Note: Lisa supplied A LOT of the information on this blog. Kudo's to her sound judgement and encyclopedic knowledge of French Bulldogs. |
